    Extreme AO Observations of Two Triple Asteroid Systems with SPHERE

    We present the discovery of a new satellite of asteroid (130) Elektra - S/2014 (130) 1 - in differential imaging and in integral field spectroscopy data over multiple epochs obtained with SPHERE/VLT. This new (second) moonlet of Elektra is about 2 km across, on an eccentric orbit and about 500 km away from the primary. For a comparative study, we also observed another triple asteroid system (93) Minerva. For both systems, component-resolved reflectance spectra of the satellites and primary were obtained simultaneously. No significant spectral difference was observed between the satellites and the primary for either triple system. We find that the moonlets in both systems are more likely to have been created by sub-disruptive impacts as opposed to having been captured.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted to be published in the Astrophysical Journal Letter

    Near-infrared spatially resolved spectroscopy of (136108) Haumea's multiple system

    The transneptunian region of the solar system is populated by a wide variety of icy bodies showing great diversity. The dwarf planet (136108) Haumea is among the largest TNOs and displays a highly elongated shape and hosts two moons, covered with crystalline water ice like Hamuea. Haumea is also the largest member of the sole TNO family known to date. A catastrophic collision is likely responsible for its unique characteristics. We report here on the analysis of a new set of observations of Haumea obtained with SINFONI at the ESO VLT. Combined with previous data, and using light-curve measurements in the optical and far infrared, we carry out a rotationally resolved spectroscopic study of the surface of Haumea. We describe the physical characteristics of the crystalline water ice present on the surface of Haumea for both regions, in and out of the Dark Red Spot (DRS), and analyze the differences obtained for each individual spectrum. The presence of crystalline water ice is confirmed over more than half of the surface of Haumea. Our measurements of the average spectral slope confirm the redder characteristic of the spot region. Detailed analysis of the crystalline water-ice absorption bands do not show significant differences between the DRS and the remaining part of the surface. We also present the results of applying Hapke modeling to our data set. The best spectral fit is obtained with a mixture of crystalline water ice (grain sizes smaller than 60 micron) with a few percent of amorphous carbon. Improvements to the fit are obtained by adding ~10% of amorphous water ice. Additionally, we used the IFU-reconstructed images to measure the relative astrometric position of the largest satellite Hi`iaka and determine its orbital elements.     GRB 110205A: Anatomy of a long gamma-ray burst

    The Swift burst GRB 110205A was a very bright burst visible in the Northern hemisphere. GRB 110205A was intrinsically long and very energetic and it occurred in a low-density interstellar medium environment, leading to delayed afterglow emission and a clear temporal separation of the main emitting components: prompt emission, reverse shock, and forward shock. Our observations show several remarkable features of GRB 110205A : the detection of prompt optical emission strongly correlated with the BAT light curve, with no temporal lag between the two ; the absence of correlation of the X-ray emission compared to the optical and high energy gamma-ray ones during the prompt phase ; and a large optical re-brightening after the end of the prompt phase, that we interpret as a signature of the reverse shock. Beyond the pedagogical value offered by the excellent multi-wavelength coverage of a GRB with temporally separated radiating components, we discuss several questions raised by our observations: the nature of the prompt optical emission and the spectral evolution of the prompt emission at high-energies (from 0.5 keV to 150 keV) ; the origin of an X-ray flare at the beginning of the forward shock; and the modeling of the afterglow, including the reverse shock, in the framework of the classical fireball model.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figure (all in colors), accepted for publication in Ap

    Physical properties of ESA Rosetta target asteroid (21) Lutetia: Shape and flyby geometry

    Aims. We determine the physical properties (spin state and shape) of asteroid (21) Lutetia, target of the ESA Rosetta mission, to help in preparing for observations during the flyby on 2010 July 10 by predicting the orientation of Lutetia as seen from Rosetta. Methods. We use our novel KOALA inversion algorithm to determine the physical properties of asteroids from a combination of optical lightcurves, disk-resolved images, and stellar occultations, although the latter are not available for (21) Lutetia. Results. We find the spin axis of (21) Lutetia to lie within 5 degrees of ({\lambda} = 52 deg., {\beta} = -6 deg.) in Ecliptic J2000 reference frame (equatorial {\alpha} = 52 deg., {\delta} = +12 deg.), and determine an improved sidereal period of 8.168 270 \pm 0.000 001 h. This pole solution implies the southern hemisphere of Lutetia will be in "seasonal" shadow at the time of the flyby. The apparent cross-section of Lutetia is triangular as seen "pole-on" and more rectangular as seen "equator-on". The best-fit model suggests the presence of several concavities.     A low density of 0.8 g/cc for the Trojan binary asteroid 617 Patroclus

    The Trojan population consists of two swarms of asteroids following the same orbit as Jupiter and located at the L4 and L5 Lagrange points of the Jupiter-Sun system (leading and following Jupiter by 60 degrees). The asteroid 617 Patroclus is the only known binary Trojan (Merline et al. 2001). The orbit of this double system was hitherto unknown. Here we report that the components, separated by 680 km, move around the system centre of mass, describing roughly a circular orbit. Using the orbital parameters, combined with thermal measurements to estimate the size of the components, we derive a very low density of 0.8 g/cc. The components of Patroclus are therefore very porous or composed mostly of water ice, suggesting that they could have been formed in the outer part of the solar system.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl

    Characteristics and large bulk density of the C-type main-belt triple asteroid (93) Minerva

    From a set of adaptive optics (AO) observations collected with the W.M. Keck telescope between August and September 2009, we derived the orbital parameters of the most recently discovered satellites of the large C-type asteroid (93) Minerva. The satellites of Minerva, which are approximately 3 and 4 km in diameter, orbit very close to the primary (∼5 and ∼8 × R_p and ∼1% and ∼2% × R_(Hill)) in a circular manner, sharing common characteristics with most of the triple asteroid systems in the main-belt. Combining these AO observations with lightcurve data collected since 1980 and two stellar occultations in 2010 and 2011, we removed the ambiguity of the pole solution of Minerva’s primary and showed that it has an almost regular shape with an equivalent diameter D_(eq) = 154 ± 6 km in agreement with IRAS observations. The surprisingly high bulk density of 1.75 ± 0.30 g/cm3 for this C-type asteroid, suggests that this taxonomic class is composed of asteroids with different compositions, For instance, Minerva could be made of the same material as dry CR, CO, and CV meteorites. We discuss possible scenarios on the origin of the system and conclude that future observations may shine light on the nature and composition of this fifth known triple main-belt asteroid

    (16) Psyche: A mesosiderite-like asteroid?

    Asteroid (16) Psyche is the target of the NASA Psyche mission. It is considered one of the few main-belt bodies that could be an exposed proto-planetary metallic core and that would thus be related to iron meteorites. Such an association is however challenged by both its near- and mid-infrared spectral properties and the reported estimates of its density. Here, we aim to refine the density of (16) Psyche to set further constraints on its bulk composition and determine its potential meteoritic analog. We observed (16) Psyche with ESO VLT/SPHERE/ZIMPOL as part of our large program (ID 199.C-0074). We used the high angular resolution of these observations to refine Psyche's three-dimensional (3D) shape model and subsequently its density when combined with the most recent mass estimates. In addition, we searched for potential companions around the asteroid. We derived a bulk density of 3.99\,±\pm\,0.26\,g\cdotcm3^{-3} for Psyche. While such density is incompatible at the 3-sigma level with any iron meteorites (\sim7.8\,g\cdotcm3^{-3}), it appears fully consistent with that of stony-iron meteorites such as mesosiderites (density \sim4.25\,\cdotcm3^{-3}). In addition, we found no satellite in our images and set an upper limit on the diameter of any non-detected satellite of 1460\,±\pm\,200}\,m at 150\,km from Psyche (0.2\%\,×\times\,RHill_{Hill}, the Hill radius) and 800\,±\pm\,200\,m at 2,000\,km (3\%\,×\times\,RHillR_{Hill}). Considering that the visible and near-infrared spectral properties of mesosiderites are similar to those of Psyche, there is merit to a long-published initial hypothesis that Psyche could be a plausible candidate parent body for mesosiderites.Comment: 16 page

    The non-convex shape of (234) Barbara, the first Barbarian

    Asteroid (234) Barbara is the prototype of a category of asteroids that has been shown to be extremely rich in refractory inclusions, the oldest material ever found in the Solar System. It exhibits several peculiar features, most notably its polarimetric behavior. In recent years other objects sharing the same property (collectively known as "Barbarians") have been discovered. Interferometric observations in the mid-infrared with the ESO VLTI suggested that (234) Barbara might have a bi-lobated shape or even a large companion satellite. We use a large set of 57 optical lightcurves acquired between 1979 and 2014, together with the timings of two stellar occultations in 2009, to determine the rotation period, spin-vector coordinates, and 3-D shape of (234) Barbara, using two different shape reconstruction algorithms. By using the lightcurves combined to the results obtained from stellar occultations, we are able to show that the shape of (234) Barbara exhibits large concave areas. Possible links of the shape to the polarimetric properties and the object evolution are discussed.     Corticosteroid suppression of lipoxin A4 and leukotriene B4from alveolar macrophages in severe asthma

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>An imbalance in the generation of pro-inflammatory leukotrienes, and counter-regulatory lipoxins is present in severe asthma. We measured leukotriene B<sub>4 </sub>(LTB<sub>4</sub>), and lipoxin A<sub>4 </sub>(LXA<sub>4</sub>) production by alveolar macrophages (AMs) and studied the impact of corticosteroids.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>AMs obtained by fiberoptic bronchoscopy from 14 non-asthmatics, 12 non-severe and 11 severe asthmatics were stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS,10 μg/ml) with or without dexamethasone (10<sup>-6</sup>M). LTB<sub>4 </sub>and LXA<sub>4 </sub>were measured by enzyme immunoassay.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>LXA<sub>4 </sub>biosynthesis was decreased from severe asthma AMs compared to non-severe (p < 0.05) and normal subjects (p < 0.001). LXA<sub>4 </sub>induced by LPS was highest in normal subjects and lowest in severe asthmatics (p < 0.01). Basal levels of LTB<sub>4 </sub>were decreased in severe asthmatics compared to normal subjects (p < 0.05), but not to non-severe asthma. LPS-induced LTB<sub>4 </sub>was increased in severe asthma compared to non-severe asthma (p < 0.05). Dexamethasone inhibited LPS-induced LTB<sub>4 </sub>and LXA<sub>4</sub>, with lesser suppression of LTB<sub>4 </sub>in severe asthma patients (p < 0.05). There was a significant correlation between LPS-induced LXA<sub>4 </sub>and FEV<sub>1 </sub>(% predicted) (r<sub>s </sub>= 0.60; p < 0.01).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Decreased LXA<sub>4 </sub>and increased LTB<sub>4 </sub>generation plus impaired corticosteroid sensitivity of LPS-induced LTB<sub>4 </sub>but not of LXA<sub>4 </sub>support a role for AMs in establishing a pro-inflammatory balance in severe asthma.</p
